With America divided into two factions, one side, McNeil’s, want the Union whilst the other side, the Southern rebellion, will do anything to ensure this does not happen.A deeply Christian man, with a pervading moral compass, McNeil writes in honest clarity about the difficulties he faced during his time fighting for a united country and the rights of the natives throughout the period 1861 – 1865. The writer, throughout his memoir, expresses admiration for his fellow Americans, on the conflicting sides, recalling how the casualties of his fellow man deeply affected him whilst fighting for the United States of America that we know today. Written in a very accessible and personal style McNeil remembers, with fantastic historical accuracy, the many battles and ambushes that he was a part of, such as: The Battle of Stone River, the Chattahoochee ambush and the Battle of Chickamauga. The diary of veteran, S. A. McNeil, detail his immensely moving time as a member of the 31st Ohio Regiment during the time of the American Civil War. McNeil’s time with the 31st Ohio Regiment is a brilliant starting point for those wishing to gain insight into life during the American Civil War. Readers will be delighted by the accounts of battles, ambushes, meetings with politicians and military figures, and will spend some time with McNeil as he recovers from a gunshot wound attained whilst fighting in the Missionary Ridge battle. Samuel A McNeil, was born in Claiborne township, Ohio, April 13, 1844, he died on August 23, 1912. He took part in all of the campaigns of the army of the Cumberland, including the battles of Stone river, Chickamauga, and the terrible assault at Mission Ridge, where he was very severely wounded, November 25, 1863. In January 1846, the young soldier re-enlisted as a veteran and was appointed sergeant. He was engaged with his company in in the memorable 120 days campaign under General Sherman, which secured the possession of Atlanta.Albion Press is an imprint of Endeavour Press, the UK's leading independent digital publisher.
